Privacy

How thegeneraldata.com, TGDC Data Card and the optional personal Gmail backup in TGDC Companion handle information. The data corpora we source and license are governed by separate written agreements; Gmail backups are excluded from those corpora.

Booking a call

If you book an introductory call, we collect your name, work email, company, selected time and any optional discussion note you provide. We use these details to arrange the call and create a calendar invitation in Google Calendar. The invitation is sent to your email address and includes the event details you entered. Google processes the calendar data under its privacy terms. We do not use booking details for advertising or add them to a marketing list. You can ask us to change or remove a booking by emailing hello@thegeneraldata.com.

Contact forms

We use what you send us to answer you. Delivery runs through an email service provider. We do not add you to a marketing list.

Please do not include confidential information or send files before the first call.

Referral program

If you request a referral link on the Data Partner page, we store your name, email address, the page language, the link and any company you name, and we email the link to you. When someone opens your link, we count the visit without cookies, using a one-way code derived from their IP address and browser that changes every day and is deleted after 30 days; the IP address itself is not stored. If they then send an enquiry or book a call, we note their company name with your link. We use this only to attribute introductions and to contact you about a referral reward. The data is kept with a database service provider. You can ask us to delete your link at any time by emailing hello@thegeneraldata.com.

What we collect

We count page views in aggregate, through a cookieless measurement service that stores no personal data and no IP address, so that we can see which documents are read.

If you allow visitor identification in the cookie banner, this site also runs a visitor identification tag from Leadsy (leadsy.ai). The tag is delivered through Instantly (instantly.ai) and loads the visitor identification service of RB2B (rb2b.com). That service looks up your IP address with a geolocation provider, ip-api.com, on every visit, and depending on where you are it may also contact identity-resolution services at liadm.com (LiveIntent), usbrowserspeed.com and alocdn.com. The tag sets cookies and local storage entries in your browser, some of which last up to 360 days, and sends your IP address, the pages you view and technical details about your browser to these providers. They match this against their own data to tell us which company, and in some cases which professional profile, a visit is likely to come from. We use this to understand which organizations are interested in our work and to contact them about it. These providers may process the data outside the European Union, including in the United States. The tag does not load until you allow visitor identification, and you can withdraw your choice at any time under Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.

If you allow visitor identification in the cookie banner, this site also runs the website visitor tracker of Apollo (apollo.io). The tracker is loaded from assets.apollo.io and stores a random visitor ID and a short queue of page visits in your browser's local storage. The visitor ID does not expire. The tracker sends the address of every page you view, the site that referred you, campaign tags in the address, your IP address and technical details about your browser to Apollo at aplo-evnt.com. Apollo matches this against its own data to tell us which company a visit likely comes from. Depending on settings on Apollo's side, the tracker can also load LiveIntent's identity resolution from liadm.com, which may link a visit to a hashed email address and through it to a professional profile. We use this for the same purpose as the Leadsy tag. Apollo may process the data outside the European Union, including in the United States. The tracker does not load until you allow visitor identification, and you can withdraw your choice at any time under Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.

If you allow measurement in the cookie banner, we also use Google Analytics 4 from Google and Microsoft Clarity from Microsoft. Both set cookies, some of which last up to two years, and receive your IP address, the pages you view, how far you scroll, which contact links you click and technical details about your browser. Clarity also records how pages are scrolled and clicked; form entries are masked, and we pass no email addresses or form contents to either service. We use this to see how visitors find the site and which pages lead them to get in touch. Neither service loads until you allow measurement, and you can withdraw your choice at any time under Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. Your choice is stored in your browser together with the moment you made it, and we ask again after twelve months. Google and Microsoft may process the data outside the European Union, including in the United States.

If you allow advertising in the cookie banner on get.thegeneraldata.com, we also use the Meta Pixel from Meta Platforms Ireland Limited on that page. It sets cookies that last up to 90 days and sends your IP address, technical details about your browser and your steps on the page (calculator started and finished, contact form started and submitted). When you submit, we also send your email address, name and phone number, hashed in your browser first. We send the same events to Meta from a server as well, through the Conversions API. We use this to see which ads on Facebook and Instagram lead to enquiries and to show them more relevantly. We and Meta are jointly responsible for collecting and transmitting this data (facebook.com/legal/controller_addendum); Meta may also process the data in the United States. None of this happens before you consent, and you can withdraw at any time under "Cookie settings" at the bottom of the page.

Fonts

Typefaces are served from this site, not from a font host. Requesting them tells no one but us that you are here.

If you contact us

When you email us, we process the details you choose to send solely to respond and, where relevant, to discuss a potential engagement. We do not sell this information or use it for advertising.

TGDC Data Card

The plugin is published by The General Data Company (General Data Labs, Inc.). Its local scanner profiles only the files or folders you explicitly select to describe the selected dataset and create a Data Card PDF for your review. It saves results separately without changing the sources. It does not automatically upload files, use telemetry, send email or require a TGDC API key.

Use only data you are authorized to process. Before scanning, you must confirm that your selection excludes health information protected by HIPAA and payment card data or other information regulated by PCI DSS. These categories must also be excluded from your answers. The plugin does not automatically detect or remove them; if you are unsure, prepare an eligible selection outside the plugin before proceeding.

The default aggregate profile excludes source body text, filenames, paths, addresses, identifiers and table values. A separate local private manifest retains per-file paths, available hashes, statuses and parser evidence without body text. It is not intended for sharing.

Your host application and model may process selected paths, commands, aggregates, your answers and other task context under your account, workspace and permission settings. The host provider’s retention is governed by its own terms and your settings. Deleting local files does not automatically delete copies retained by the host provider. Local scanning does not guarantee entirely offline processing. Dependency setup may download software from PyPI into an isolated Python environment; it does not upload your source data.

Reports, answers and the private manifest remain at the local locations you choose until you delete them. Answers may contain confidential information, so preview the PDF and aggregate profile before deciding whether to share them voluntarily; nothing is automatically sent to TGDC. The plugin does not certify anonymization, absence of personal data or legal sharing rights. For support, contact hello@thegeneraldata.com.

Personal Gmail backup

Gmail backup is an optional, automatic backup for the signed-in account holder. Before connecting, Companion explains the use of your mailbox and asks you to enable backup explicitly. Google authorization alone does not start copying messages. The read-only Gmail permission lets the service read your entire mailbox, including Spam and Trash, but not send, change or delete mail in Gmail.

We copy original messages, including headers, subjects, senders, recipients, message bodies and attachments, as restorable email files. The service also keeps the connected account identity, message identifiers, file sizes, backup times, status and your activation consent. Each message is limited to 100 MiB. Unavailable or oversized messages are reported as failures, and a pass with failed messages is not reported as a complete backup.

After activation, the next available scheduler run begins the backup. The scheduler normally checks every two minutes and continues unfinished work automatically. A new mailbox pass is scheduled six hours after the previous pass ends. This runs on the service, including while Companion is closed; quitting the app does not pause backup. This is a periodic backup, not a real-time mirror: mail deleted before it is copied may not be recoverable, and subsequent label changes are not preserved.

Gmail copies are stored separately from Companion recordings, documents and Send submissions in private Supabase storage. Message contents are encrypted before storage, with a separate key for each backup. Our service processes the contents and manages these keys to perform backup and authenticated restoration; this is not end-to-end encryption. Backup copies are used only to provide and maintain your personal backup and recovery. They are not sold, licensed as a dataset, used for advertising or used to train AI models. The website analytics providers described above do not receive Gmail message contents through this feature.

Copies remain until you delete the backup. Deleting mail in Gmail, pausing backup or revoking Google access does not delete saved copies. Delete backup immediately removes the active decryption key and blocks new restoration requests. Encrypted files and backup records are then removed automatically; the app shows deletion in progress until cleanup finishes. An already running request may finish. Infrastructure recovery copies may persist until their retention period expires; deletion does not promise instantaneous erasure from every infrastructure copy. Files you have restored to your Mac remain under your control.

Gmail in Send

Separately from the backup, you can choose Gmail labels in Companion and send their messages, including attachments, to TGDC like any other source. Companion lists your label names so you can choose, and reads messages only in the labels you choose and only after you press Send. Messages you send are handled like other material you send and may be included, after anonymization, in datasets we license.

Manage your Gmail backup

In Companion, open Connect, choose Gmail and check the displayed account. Read the disclosure before enabling automatic backup. The backup overview shows the saved message count, the last complete pass and any errors. Connecting a different Google account does not transfer an existing backup to it.

Pause stops new retrieval at the next service check; an individual request already in progress may finish, but it is not committed as a saved message after the pause takes effect. Resume schedules automatic work again. To withdraw Google permission, remove Companion’s access in your Google Account connections. A revoked or expired grant must be reconnected before new messages can be backed up.

Restore to this Mac downloads copies that are already backed up as .eml email files. It does not initiate a new mailbox export or put messages back into Gmail. You can open these files with a compatible mail application. Delete backup requires confirmation, affects the service’s backup only, and does not delete mail from Gmail or files already restored to your Mac.

Companion marks restored files as personal backups and blocks recognizable copies, backup folders and marked archives from Send. Recognition depends on this metadata, which external tools can remove; it cannot identify every externally modified Gmail-derived file. Keep restored mail for personal recovery and do not submit it as a dataset contribution.

If deletion remains pending or you cannot access your account, contact hello@thegeneraldata.com. Do not send us passwords, access tokens or mailbox contents.

Data we license

The datasets we supply are anonymized before delivery: named individuals, personal data and commercial identifiers are removed or pseudonymized. Sourcing and licensing are governed by written agreements with the originating parties and our customers, not by this notice.

Your rights

You can ask what personal data we hold about you, request correction or deletion, or object to processing. Email hello@thegeneraldata.com and we will respond within a reasonable time. You can also block or delete the cookies and local storage entries in your browser settings at any time.
